  • If you want to jump to my very narrow definition of who should actually by an Intel 11th Gen Core CPU right now, it's at 5:02. Thanks to everyone who watched, and even to the people who downvoted or whatever because of the title -- I stand by it. 🤷‍♂️ See you Sunday for Tech News!

    • @Matlockization Only two things matter for a cpu. Price and performance. All the rest is pointless nerd crap no one cares about unless you are a fanboi. Right now you can get Intel 10th gen super cheap and it performs within a few irrelevant percentage points of amd cpu you can't easily buy. But hey you go and feel proud you are a blind cheerleader for a corporation I'll be a normal human and use logic.

      Nona UrbiznizNona Urbiznizپیش 11 روز
    • @Nona Urbizniz Ok so who cares that Intel are on 14nm for going on a decade now. And who cares that Intel CPU's are running toasty a whole lot more ! Well the buyer cares and their voting with their wallet and not caring what Pauls hardware says about Intel. Who have only dropped their prices in the last 3 months and not before. You just got gimped by Intel.

      MatlockizationMatlockizationپیش 11 روز
    • @Matlockization Who cares what power draw it has. AMD used to be the power draw kings especially on their gpu and no one cared then and no one cares now that intel has higher power draw. You act like the additional 65w power draw on a house circuit will be something noticeable over the normal draw of a typical household. As soon as you sister/wife/gf plugs in the hair dryer she just used up days of cpu use to get a blow dry. Or the microwave or air conditioner etc etc etc.

      Nona UrbiznizNona Urbiznizپیش 11 روز
    • @Nona Urbizniz You forgot to say that lack of supply means that AMD is selling 4 to every one Intel CPU and that performance gap is a lot wider. As for those mobo package deals you talk about, AMD have got that too only their cheaper and have a ton more express lanes etc, then Intel. I tell you what, you go ahead and get your >130W Intel CPU with no OC and we will go for our 54-65W AMD. How's that sound ?

      MatlockizationMatlockizationپیش 11 روز
    • @Matlockization If you are worried about your power bill you ain't buying into high end cpu anyways. Market forces at work right now as I said earlier is lack of supply for amd and a ton of cheap 10th gen intel. You can get 10850k for around $375 right now and a mobo with the vrm to oc it properly for around $150. Compare the benchmarks of that and try to find an amd cpu in stock that can match it for the price.

  • Honestly the most compelling offering in the whole line-up is probably the 11400F because its in a price bracket where AMD is currently not offering anything current-gen and its traditional CPUs that have dominated that segment of the market (1600AF, 2600, 3300x) are all short on stock and, at long last, are soundly beaten in performance. But make no mistake, almost everything above the 11400 is basically redundant...or they would be if supply could meet demand.

  • AMD releasing zen3 starting at 300 dollars for a 6 core part, is like if Intel released the newest node on HEDT first. Even they have always released the newest node all the way down to the 2 cores on desktop with this years pentium/i3 refresh being the first time thats different, and thats just because RKL is a stopgap, and at least RKL doesn't start at 300. Im tired of people making excuses as to why this is supposedly AOK, especially during a silicon shortage. You can't convice me for a second there are no ccds with less than 6 good cores being binned out. They have good yields sure, but not anywhere near 14nm++++++++++++ yields and Intel is still finding silicon to use for i3 and pentium. Guess this is karma coming back and biting AMD for outsourcing.

  • 11400, 11600 or 5600x? Easy, 11400. Differences in gaming can't be seen without fps counter. Having said that... 5800x is readily available here and not marked up. I almost would pay extra to give Intel the birdie and have possibly of upgrading to Ryzen 9 in the future.

  • Does it make sense for futureproofing. You get the best board worst chip and ram. Then you update the other components later. For it to be futureproof the top CPU will come into play in approx. 5 years. Does the six core chip make sense now, and does the top CPU give you enough head room in the future, compared to AMD?

    MozartificeRMozartificeRپیش 13 روز
  • No one talks about Intel motherboard costs. Have those gone down? Have AMD motherboards gone up enough to equal them? Even when Intel was sort of competitive with the 3000 series line up in cost it used to be that the mobo would push you over the edge. Heck, even in the 2000 series days it often time made more sense to go with a more expensive AMD CPU just because it balanced out at the end with a lower end Intel chip + Z mobo.

A HuananZhi X99TF motherboard (4 slots DDR3, 4 slots DDR4) fitted with 4x8GB of desktop DDR3 1600 in QUAD channel. Motherboard Price...US$100 plus $12 delivery. RAM was purchased used (Mushkin Redline, 32GB over four sticks for $120) Nicely paired with a venerable GTX 1080Ti (purchased last NOV for $350), it does a wonderful job. Runs cool with a SNOWMAN dual 120mm RGB fan 6x6mm pipe CPU cooler plus RGB top-plate ($37). Never goes above 60C when fully stressed. Boots Win10Pro from its primary NVME m.2 slot (a secondary NVME m.2 is also present for expansion). Wifi/BT via its m.2 slot for that purpose. Active cooling of its VRM heatsink keeps power to the CPU very cool. Excellent for productivity and a solid gamer.

I have no idea where the huge amount of amd fanboys come from. Yeah theyre ahead at the moment but why does that make intel complete garbage in every way? • Did my build in fall 2019, and went to Microcenter fully expecting to pick up an AMD chip because the 9000 series Intel chips were lack-luster... but at the end of the day I walked out the door with an i9 9900k 1) It was available. The AMD chips could have been available in just a few days, and supply issues in general were not a thing then, so if I was patient they were more than happy to order it up for me and let me know when it would be in stock... but it had been 9 years since my i7 2600 had been built, and it was dead, so I was a little bit desperate to get something up and running. 2) It was cheaper. While the MSRP was higher than an AMD chip with the same core count, Intel is no fool, and knows when to discount their chips, so the price of the chip itself was exactly the same (after considering the $100 off motherboard bundle for intel chips compared to $50 off for AMD chips at the time). So with nearly $200 below MSRP it was looking a bit better... but there is more. 3) The Intel platform was cheaper. While the CPU was the same, on the Intel side of the fence there were more choices, and cheaper choices for high end motherboards. A lot of this is because Intel packs more and more of the motherboard features onto the CPU itself, while AMD board makers need to buy a few extra things as add-on chips for the board. Part of it also was that the higher end AMD boards had northbridge chips which needed heftier cooling solutions with fans, and VRMs with heftier power capacity as AMD's CPUs were still more power hungry than Intel... plus the AMD chips were brand spanking new, while the Intel chips had the 10xxx series coming right around the corner, so they were off-loading inventory. 4) At the end of the day, the 9xxx Intel chips vs the 3xxx AMD chips traded blows in a lot of categories at the time, but at the end of the day the Intel chips still had more overhead for overclocking. Now I am not a huge OCer, but my old 2600 ran at it's max multiplier at 4.2GHz for nearly 10 years (and now it lives a retirement life at stock in my home server, where it will sit for the next 10 years lol), and conventional wisdom said at the time that I could likely hit 5GHz+ on air with Intel with no problems, while the AMD was not going to get much over stock. Sure enough with minimal changes I have been running at 5.2GHz for nearly 2 years now with no issues using the same heat sink that I used on my 10 year old machine, and I am sure I could get more out of it with a modern cooler and playing with settings while AMD 3000 series chips hit on average ~4.8GHz Point is: At the end of the day the performance differences between Intel and AMD are minimal. Even if one 'is better' it does not mean that the other one is terrible. If you need a computer, just pick up what is available while meeting your needs. Don't get hung up with one brand or another because both are going to be awesome, and both will likely last 10-12 years if you treat it right. My last system was almost 10 years old, and on replacement everything I do is still GPU bound, so there is minimal improvement. If going from a high-end 10 year old box to a modern box makes next to no real-world experiential improvement, then picking Intel vs AMD with a 5% difference isn't going to measure up to a hill of beans either. Far more important to get what you can, and enjoy the heck out of it.

  • I have a reason to cons for AM5 or Alder lake, which is DDR5. It will be costly AF at least for the first 12-18 months if not more. Forget to pay 80 bucks/eur for 16gb of DDR5, it will be a very costly upgrade if anyone wants to wait for that.. Also It seems only top end z690 will run DDR5 while lower end chipsets will run DDR4 (Alder lake may have an hybrid DDR controller allowing both), but this usually also means troubles, issues, compatibility with early production modules; often you won't find the same kit to double the amount of ram in the next years (once manufacturers drop to different density DRAM modules and such), requiring to sell it off and buy another new kit. AM5 isn't clear if it will be DDR5 exclusive or not, the point is probably the same. Either red or blue will have at least the 1st iteration of IMCs that may prove troublesome for compatibility..

  • I mean, 98% of people buying flagship cpu's are only using them for gaming. Compute benchmarks have their place, but they're not at all equal to gaming benchmarks when comparing cpu's. This isnt at all a good launch from Intel, but they're still the best.

  • My local microcenter is selling 10700k for 249.99 and the 10900k 399.99. I hope someone shares this info as Newegg is a little overpriced and microcenter is well under msrp for the Intel Cpus right now. I myself just purchased a 5800x and 6800xt at my Houston microcenter. Didn't need to upgrade my 3700x and 5700xt but did so because they were available. Just sold my 5700xt for 600$ locally to a chap that needed a gpu.

  • Did everyone forget that the 8-core 5800x is way overpriced? the 3700x was only £320
